India’s best performance at the 32nd Olympic Games. India won seven medals, the highest ever in the tournament. The COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately caused the delay of the Tokyo Olympics. This was why most people got confused, as official documents state that this is the 2020 Olympics, not the 2021 Olympics. Tokyo Olympics 2021 Rescheduled Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic
The 2020 Summer Olympics were planned to get started on July 24, 2020. But this was the time when COVID-19 was at its peak. As a result, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed the possibility of hosting the Games upon the request of IOC President Thomas Bach. However, unfortunately, they decided to postpone the Olympic Games from July 23, 2021, to August 8, 2021. That’s why, almost a year after the Olympic Games were held, no matter the year changed, they were still called the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Number of Countries and Players, New Sports Added
In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated. The event was conducted with over 11,000 athletes competing across 339 events in 33 sports. Undoubtedly, this was the largest-ever contingent of athletes at the Olympic Games.
Additionally, new sports were introduced to the Tokyo Olympics for the first time. The sports were skateboarding, surfing, karate, sport climbing, and freestyle BMX. IOCs added them since they wanted to make games more youthful and appealing to a wider audience.

The official theme of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was “United by Emotion.” The theme was aimed at celebrating the power of sport. It was also meant to bring the world together despite the global COVID-19 crisis.
Tokyo Olympics 2021 Oath
The Olympic oath for this edition was different from the previous Olympics. It was decided that athletes, coaches, and judges would take the same oath.
The oath pledges to respect the environment and create a clean, fair, and inclusive sports environment. In total, six individuals took the oath, including two athletes, coaches, and judges. Earlier, only three individuals were invited to take the oath.
Tokyo Olympics 2021 India Medals
India for the Tokyo Olympics sent its biggest contingent ever. A total number of 127 players were selected for 18 sports. In the Olympic ceremony, boxer Mary Kom and Indian hockey team captain Manpreet Singh were chosen as the flag bearers of the Indian team. Meanwhile, bronze medal winner wrestler Bajrang Punia was given the charge for the closing ceremony.

Miraitowa was the official mascot of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The mascot is identified as a blue-and-white checkered figure. In addition to this, Miraitowas is inspired by the Japanese word “Mirai” meaning “future”, and “towa” meaning “eternity”. Ryo Taniguchi designed the mascot to highlight the values of the Olympic Games.

Neeraj Chopra wrote his name in history by becoming the first person to win a medal(gold) in athletics. He became the new Olympic champion with a throw of 87.58 m. Undoubtedly, He has opened the door for young Indian athletes at the Olympics and inspired them with his performance. Neeraj topped his group with a throw of 86.65 meters. Finally, in the last round, Neeraj clinched the gold medal with a throw of 87.58 meters. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic took silver. Furthermore, the bronze medal went to Vitezslav Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Mirabai Chanu gave a good start to India’s Tokyo Olympic jouney. She finished second with a silver at the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event. Chanu’s achievement was significant, since, she had a disappointing performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics. China’s Hou Zhihui won the gold, while Indonesia’s Windy Aisah won the bronze.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s medal was unexpected because of his inexperience and because it was his first Olympics. Ravi stunned many big names to reach the finals and bagged the silver medal in the men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling category. He lost to ROC’s Zavur Uguev in the final with a score of 7-4. Even though Ugoev is the favorite to win the world title twice, Ravi performed well in the final. Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Tsarnaev and American Thomas Gilman won bronze medals.

Badminton star PV Sindhu bagged a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics after defeating He Bing Jiao of China 21-13, 21-15. What’s more, this was the second Olympic medal of Sindhu after the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sindhu became the first Indian female athlete to win two Olympic medals. Chen Yufei of China won the gold medal. Furthermore, Tai Tzu-Ying from Chinese Taipei won the silver.

Out of which, 39 were gold medals. Moreover, China tried to challenge the dominance of the USA by winning 89 medals in total. They won 38 gold medals, too. The host country, Japan, was in third place with 58 medals (27 gold).
For the first time in the history of the games, three countries won their first-ever gold medal. These countries are Qatar, the Philippines, and Bermuda. Also, countries like San Marino, Turkmenistan, and Burkina Faso celebrated their first-ever Olympic medal.
India, on the other hand, finished its campaign in a respectable 48th position. India jumped to 7 medals along with a gold compared to its previous Olympic performance (2 medals). Also, this was India’s best-ever performance at a single edition of the Olympic Games.
